Elizabeth "Betty" Smith, age 93, died Monday, July 26, 2010, at the Western Plains Medical Complex, Dodge City, Kansas.
She was born September 8, 1916, at Island, Kentucky, the daughter of Herschel E. and Annie Pollack Nall. As a young girl she attended school in Livermore, Kentucky, graduating from Livermore High School. She later attended Lockyear's Business College.
On April 4, 1942, she married Arthur Loyd Smith at Morganfield, Kentucky. After their marriage, the couple had made their home in Evansville, Indiana, and Owensboro, Kentucky. She had recently moved to Meade, Kansas, residing with her daughter and son-in-law. Over the years, she worked for Crescent Plastics, Evansville, as a secretary, switchboard operator and receptionist.
She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church of Evansville, Indiana, past member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church in Owensboro and attended the United Methodist Church of Meade, Kansas She enjoyed baking, sewing, crafts, working within her church, and attending to her flowers. Throughout her life, she was always willing to help others in need. She went by many names including "Betty", "Grandma", and "Mimi".
She is survived by a son, Steve Smith and wife Jeannie of Anderson, Indiana; daughter, Linda Kaye Brown and husband Philip of Meade, Kansas; five grandchildren, Tara Schapmire and husband Marty, Greg Preuss and special friend Mai Tran, Zach Smith, Derek Smith, and Heidi Smith; two step-grandchildren, Sonja Midyett and husband Lance, Doug Brown and wife Laura; three great-grandchildren, Lily Schapmire, Mikayla Smith, and Nick Schapmire; six step-great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Midyett, Rachel Midyett, Mitchell Midyett, Anna Brown, Molly Brown, and Cooper Brown
She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur on February 6, 2005; her parents; a brother, Norman Nall; a sister, Lois Benjamin; and a longtime friend and companion, her beloved Dachshund, Yoda.
A celebration of life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Central United Methodist Church in Evansville, IN followed by a gathering of fellowship. A service of committal will take place at 2 p.m. on August 28 in Christ Chapel at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
The family would welcome memorials to the Foundation Fighting Blindness.
