As a child, Betsy loved any and all books. Throughout her life, she could hardly be found without a book. Her love of learning led her into the field of education. She graduated from Daviess County High School, obtained her Bachelors of Arts in Education from Murray State University, and earned her Masters degree from Western Kentucky University. She began her teaching career at Apollo High School and moved to Burns Middle School when it opened. During her 30 years of teaching English, History, and Social Studies she touched the lives of numerous students. At Burns Betsy co-sponsored the Kentucky Youth Assembly for 15 years where students learned about the legislative process, researched and wrote their own bills, and presented them to the Kentucky legislature. She also sponsored the Kentucky United Nations Assembly where students researched a specific country and presented information about the countries' health and humanitarian concerns. After retirement, Betsy regularly volunteered and substituted at Burns.

Betsy loved being with her family, reading, traveling, history, music, and spending Friday evenings with special friends. Her travels took her to all 50 states as well as all over the world, such as, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Norway, France, Italy, Russia, and Peru to name a few. Some of her favorite sites were the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu, and Treasure Island in Fiji.
