Elizabeth Johnson Lightfoot was embraced by her family when her courageous battle with cancer ended with peace and dignity, on March 7, 2003. Elizabeth was born on July 25, 1941 in Owensboro, KY, to J Sam and Elizabeth Ballantine Johnson. A devout Christian, she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, colleague, church and community member.
She is survived by her husband William Lightfoot; her son Daniel Lightfoot and daughter Kate Lightfoot of Boone; her daughter Sarah Lightfoot Cooley, son-in-law David Cooley and granddaughter Grace Elizabeth Cooley of Chapel Hill; her sisters Nancy Riggs of Pocahontas, AR, and Sarah Barrass of Owensboro, KY; three nieces, two nephews, eight great nieces and nephews, and many cousins.
Elizabeth graduated from Owensboro High School in Owensboro, KY and received her BA Degree in English from Indiana University. Married in Spain, on the Rock of Gibraltar, Elizabeth went on to live an energetic and adventurous life filled with an active appreciation of nature, travel, and a love of music. She received her MA and EDS Degrees from Appalachian State University. She spent her career teaching others the love of reading through her work as a reading specialist at Appalachian State University, Less McRae College, Caldwell Community College, the Watauga County public school system and through private tutoring.
A Memorial Service will be held at Glenn Funeral Home in Owensboro, KY on Saturday, March 15, 2003, at 4:00 PM. Family will receive visitors from 2:00-4:00 PM before the service.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Hospitality House of Boone, 302 W King Street, Boone, NC, 28607 and Boone United Methodist Church, 471 New Market Blvd, Boone, NC, 28607.
