Elaine Byrne

May 28, 1946 — January 20, 2012

Maple Mount Sister Elaine Byrne, 65, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died Jan. 20 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 47th year of religious life. She was a native of Curdsville.

Sister Elaine was a creative and talented teacher and liturgy planner, and much loved by her students, friends and family. She taught at Trinity High School, Whitesville (1977-78), was principal and teacher at St. Peter of Alcantara, Stanley (1978-81), served in community vocation ministry (1991-98) and was pastoral associate at Precious Blood, Owensboro (1997-98). She also ministered at the Newman Center, Bowling Green, Ky., St. Thomas Moore in Paducah, and St. Jerome , Fancy Farm, and in Missouri, before retiring in 2011.

Sr. Byrne was preceded in death by her parents, John D. and Anna Marie Byrne, and a brother, John D. Byrne Jr.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Lou (Darrell) Payne of Philpot and Margie (Jim) Rode of Whiteland, Ind.; three brothers, J.L. (Joan) Byrne, Tony (Betty) Byrne and Eddie (Alo) Byrne and a sister-in-law, Barbara Byrne, all of Owensboro; nieces and nephews, aunts , uncles, and the members of her religious community.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation will begin Monday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m.

Gifts in memory of Sister Elaine may take the form of donations to the Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph, 8001 Cummings Road, Maple Mount, KY 42356. Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
