Edward Welsh

August 19, 1916 — February 17, 2014

Edward "Ed" Welsh, 97 passed away on Monday, February 17, 2014 from complications of a fractured hip. He was born on August 11, 1916 in Daviess Co., KY to the late Patrick and Jessie Montgomery Welsh. He was retired from the Owensboro Fire Department after 30 years of service. Ed was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. Stephen Cathedral, where he had been active in the St. Vincent DePaul Society, a member of the church choir and an usher for many years. He also helped count the weekend offerings from church every Monday morning. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II in the 11th Combat Engineers and served during the European Theatre.

In his earlier years, he coached youth baseball at Western Little League, and also, along with friend, Joe Stinnett, was instrumental in starting the Owensboro Catholic Grade School basketball league. He loved playing golf with his regular foursome at Ben Hawes Golf Course. He had 2 Holes-In-One in his lifetime. He enjoyed mowing his yard and was a KY Colonel. Ed's daily ritual included lunch with friends at the Elizabeth Munday Senior Center, then noon mass at St. Stephen's, and on to the V.F.W. to meet his veteran friends. He also enjoyed annual summer vacations with his family.

Ed was also preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Johnston Welsh on May 11, 2006, an infant brother, J. G. Welsh, and three sisters, Virginia Clayton, Lorene Hodskins, and Mayme Wethington.

Surviving are a daughter, Becky Jesop and husband Gary of Evansville, three sons, Dennis Welsh and wife Peggy of Philpot, Dan Welsh and wife Alice of Owensboro, and Gayle Welsh of Owensboro, four grandchildren, Chris (Amber) Jesop and Mark Jesop, all of Evansville, and Blake and Travis Welsh, both of Philpot, four great grandchildren, Maddie, Gracie, Annie, and Marshall Jesop, all of Evansville, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be 12 Noon Thursday, February 20, at St. Stephen Cathedral. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be from 3:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday and after 10:00 A.M. Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Prayers will be 7:30 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staffs at the Carmel Home and Kindred Transitional Care and Rehabilitation CenterHillcrest and a special thanks to his in-home caregivers, Stephanie Payne and Cheryl Haynes.
