Gasser, Edith Maxine, 93, passed away on May 18, 2015 at Westport Place Health Campus in Louisville, KY. Maxine was born February 12, 1922 in Richmond, MO to the late Josephine (Whitmer) and Charles R. Derstler. She had 2 older sisters Thelma Lucille Barnhardt and Helen Louise Williams Frazer. She had one younger brother, Charles Robert Derstler whose wife Lavon lives in Liberty, MO. Maxine grew up in Richmond, MO, skipped a grade in elementary school and graduated from high school at age 17. She moved to her Aunt Thelma's and worked as a car hop for Roy's Hamburger place until she turned 18 and was eligible to enroll in St Luke's nursing school in Kansas City. She graduated as an RN in September, 1945, enlisted in the US Army, and was a 2nd lieutenant at Camp Carson, Colorado. While in the Army she met her late husband, David Jean Gasser. They were married On May 10,1946 in Louisville. They lived in Indianapolis a short time where Maxine worked in the nursery at a hospital and David worked for the Post Office. They moved back to Louisville and David went into the Army surplus business with his father, Theodore Gasser. Their Louisville store was forced to close due to interstate construction. David moved his business to the Trading Post at 9th and Triplett St. in Owensboro KY 1960. The double quonset hut building was an Owensboro landmark for over 30 years. Maxine is survived by her daughter, Helena Gasser Danhauer (Phillip) of Louisville, KY; son, Steven Brice Gasser (Karen) of Shepherdsville, KY; son, Paul David Gasser (Wendy) of LaGrange, KY; son, John Allen Gasser (Ann) of Gainesville, FL; daughter, Mary Gasser Sullivan (Bart) of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren, Gwendolyn Danhauer, Michael Danhauer, Eric Gasser, Jason Gasser (Kelly), Courtney Gasser, Lyndsay Gasser, Kimberly Gasser Elder (Josh), Jonathan Gasser, Michael Gasser, Yasmin Gasser, Robert Gasser, Hannah Sullivan, and Jack Sullivan; great-grandchildren, Hanna and Sara Griffith, Grason, Jackson, and Jason Gasser, Aslynn Gasser, and Ava Sullivan; niece Candice Williams Woodcock, and nephews David R. Wheatley, Larry Wheatley, Clifford Wheatley, and Danny Adams.
Services will be 9:00 A.M. Thursday, May 21, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with burial following in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 P.M. Wednesday with prayers at 7:00 P.M. and after 8:00 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
