Edgar B. Sanders, 91, of Owensboro passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at his home. He was born in Owensboro to the late Henry C. "Jack" and Bertha Bedell Sanders.
Mr. Sanders was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. His service included the D-Day Invasion and his detail was one of the first to arrive at Utah Beach to clear land mines for the arriving troops. He was of the Baptist faith.
Edgar was a nationally known Ford mechanic and a drag racing legend. He owned Ed Sanders' Garage for many years and his engine building skills helped propel Owensboro native Darrell Waltrip to his first race at the renowned Daytona International Speedway. As his connections to the racing world and NASCAR grew, his mechanical expertise became sought after by race teams across the country.
During retirement Mr. Sanders enjoyed bringing an old family home place in Fordsville back to life and traveling extensively. He enjoyed family vacations, a trip out west with his daughters, a trip to Alaska with his sons, as well as trips with his wife to all of the forty-eight continental United States, Mexico, Canada and parts of Europe.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Hettie Bell Smith Sanders on January 8, 2016; a sister, Geraldine Boardman and her husband, Duane.
Mr. Sanders is survived by daughters, Linda Spinks and her husband, Barry, and Connie Hobby, both of Owensboro; sons, Kent Sanders of Hardinsburg, Kentucky and Steve Sanders and his wife, Christine of Madison, Alabama; six grandchildren, Karen Roberts and her husband, Wes, Stacey Johnson, Kim Mezur and her husband, Brian, Jeremy Kruger and his wife Tiffany, Nichole Lynn Sanders and Mollye Sanders; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The service will be at 2 PM Monday, January 25 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Rev. Wes Roberts and Dr. Ron Williams will officiate. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-7 PM and after 12 PM on Monday at the funeral home.
