Earl Ray Roberts, 65, of Tell City, IN, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Perry County Hospital. Born in Daviess Co., KY, a son of the late Thomas Edward and Pauline Jones Roberts, he retired after 23 years from Lewis Brothers Bakery. A life-long member of Providence United Methodist Church, where he served on the Staff-Parish Committee and was the former treasurer, Mr. Roberts graduated from Daviess County High School in 1957, where he played on the first boys basketball team to go to the Kentucky state tournament. A sports enthusiast, he coached T-Ball the first year it was introduced in Daviess County, coached both minor and major league girls softball at Philpot, and was past president of the Daviess County Parks and Recreation Board. He had formerly worked for the Daviess County Court Clerks office. A devoted father and grandfather, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Carol Jennings Roberts in 2000, and four brothers, Thomas Hampton Roberts, Clyde Harris Roberts, S.M. Roberts, and Floyd Buddy Roberts.
His daughter and son-in-law, Jana and Mark Bowling of Lexington, two grandchildren, Abbie and Brady Bowling, both of Lexington, three brothers, Ira Lee and Bryce Roberts of Philpot and Edward Roberts of Utica, two sisters, Virgie Bosley of Masonville and Dorothy Barnett of Philpot, and an aunt, Thelma Kessinger of Louisville, survive him.
The funeral service is at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Providence United Methodist Church in Philpot. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery.
