E. Jean Matthis, 85, of Owensboro, passed away January 13, 2015. She was born June 12, 1929 in Butler County to the late Robert Elan Sr. and Nettie Ayers Gidcumb. Jean was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Her children and grandchildren were number one, Jean loved being a mother. Jean was a very strong, loving, butter and lard cookin', southern beauty, that believed in her faith until the day she earned her golden wings.
Jean was preceded in death by her son, W. Richard Matthis in November 2013.
Survivors include her husband James A. Matthis; sons, J. Ronald Matthis of Kuttawa, Ky, Samuel L. Matthis (Cindy) of Owensboro, and Michael L. Matthis of Owensboro; daughters, Carole A. Starks (Hank) of Punta Gorda, Fl., Gina M. Berry (Ben) of Owensboro, and Donna M. Matthis of Owensboro; sister Helen Smith (Dewey) of Morgantown.
A private graveside will be held at Resurrection Cemetery. The family is asking for all family, friends, and co-workers to come and celebrate her life Saturday, January 24th, from 1:30-4:00 PM at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Hall. We know it's not traditional, but it is exactly the way she wanted to be remembered and what she had requested.
