Durwood Mefford

Durwood Mefford, 93, of Owensboro, KY, slipped into the arms of his Savior on Saturday morning, January 17, 2015. He was born in Huntsville, KY, on Feb. 11, 1921, and later moved to Beech Creek, KY, where with his siblings, C.W., Billy, Nelda, and David, he was lovingly raised by Raymond and Dulcie Grubb Mefford.

Durwood was a 1938 graduate of Hughes-Kirk High School, and went on to Western Kentucky State Teachers College to pursue a degree in music. While there he joined the Army Reserves at the age of 20. In 1944 he was called to active duty, serving in the European theatre of operations, primarily in the Rhineland. Following the armistice he was stationed in Paris as part of the rebuilding process.

He returned to Western Kentucky and graduated in 1948 with a degree in accounting. He moved to Owensboro and was hired in 1949 in the tax/accounting department of Texas Gas, where he met his future wife, and retired in 1984 after 35 years of service.

Mr. Mefford was a devoted member of Buena Vista Baptist Church, where he served as music director, deacon, Sunday school teacher, and numerous other volunteer positions for over 50 years.

The primary love of his life was his Savior, Jesus Christ, followed by his family, his church and his country.

He was preceeded in death by two brothers, a sister, and his beloved wife, Martha. He is survived by a brother, David Mefford of Hendersonville, TN, his daughters Susan Toadvine (Mike), Joy Malone (David), and Janie Wilson (Jon), his grandchildren Chris Toadvine (Jennifer), Ben Toadvine, Katie Malone Redfern (Mark), Emily Malone and Calvin Malone; and 7 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Buena Vista Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will, with full military honors, will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
