Dr. J. Michael Kavolus, 72, of Owensboro, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born in Racine, Wisconsin to the late Joseph John and Edna M. Redle Kavolus.
He was a U. S. Navy veteran, having served as a Lieutenant Commander on the nuclear submarine, USS Lafayette.
Dr. Kavolus was an orthopedic surgeon who practiced in Owensboro for more than twenty five years. He completed his undergraduate work at Kansas University; attended medical school at the University of Kentucky; completed his surgical internship at the University of Washington; served as Chief Resident at West Virginia University Department of Orthopedics; and completed a hand fellowship at the University of Louisville with the Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center. Throughout his career he was a member of several local and national medical associations and organizations. Dr. Kavolus enjoyed entertaining family and friends, traveling the world extensively, reading and being outdoors. He was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral.
Dr. Kavolus is survived by his wife, Nancy Mansfield Kavolus; his daughter, Emily Kavolus Grant and her husband, Chad; a grandson, Beau Richard Grant; sisters, Sally Kavolus O'Leary of Wakefield, MA and Jeanne Kavolus Foster and her husband, Tim of Scottsdale, AZ; a brother, Dr. Christopher Kavolus and his wife, Paula of Greenville, SC; niece, Dr. Alison Foster Meindl; nephews, Peter and Andrew Foster, Dr. Joseph, Michael, Matthew, Stephen and Thomas Kavolus.
The service will be at 11 AM Saturday, April 9 at St. Stephen Cathedral with burial at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 3 until 7 PM, with prayers at 7, and Saturday after 9:30 AM at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
