Douglas R. Funk

Douglas Randolph Funk, 86, of Owensboro, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the Carmel Home. He was born in Ohio County, Kentucky to the late Ira D. and Gertrey (Raymond) Funk.

Doug was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. His service in the American Area and Asiatic-Pacific Theater included three ships: USS Wyoming, USS Pittsburgh and USS Rockwall. He was the recipient of 3 Battle Stars and the Victory Medal. Doug also served in the Navy Reserves until 1955. He was a faithful and lifelong contributor to the USO, the Navy Memorial and many other veterans' organizations.

He was a small business man for most of his life. Doug retired from Murphy Appliance where he had been the principal partner from 1948 until his retirement in May of 2011. He had been a member of Seven Hills Baptist Church and Assistant Scout Leader of Troop #37. Doug enjoyed refinishing furniture, fishing and regular socializing with friends at Delores's Caf.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Evelyn Smith Funk on February 16, 2010.

He is survived by a son, Gary Douglas Funk and his wife Sandra J. of Owensboro; grandchild, Jason Sean Funk of Newburgh, IN; great grandchildren, Michael Lewis Funk and his wife Chelsea, Samantha Diane Funk and Mya Renee Montgomery; great great grandchild, Makayla Dawn Gourley; sister, Anna Layton Miller and her husband Daniel H. of Bowling Green, KY and a nephew, Daniel H. Miller, Jr. and his wife Faith.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Rev. T.A. Prickett will officiate. Private burial will be at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Wednesday from 1:00 pm until service time at the funeral home.
