Douglas D. Brown

Douglas D. Brown, 89, of Owensboro, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010, at his home. He was born December 13, 1920 to the late Thomas and Edith Brown in Daviess County. He was a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church and an Army Veteran of WW II. During the war he served in the US Army's 106th Infantry Division and fought valiantly on D-Day and in the Battle of the Bulge. His bravery and heroism on the battlefield earned him numerous medals including five bronze stars. His mastery of weapons earned him the appointment as a body guard for General Omar Bradley.

On his return to civilian life Doug worked with his father designing and building fine furniture and for 20 years was renowned in our area as a master craftsman. He later worked for the US Postal service until his retirement in 1984.

Doug's love of golf began in childhood when he worked as a caddie at the local country club. He was a multi-time champion in his flight in city tournaments and made three hole-in-ones during his lifetime.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, C.T. Brown and Darrel Brown.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 62 years, Ola Brown; his children, Larry (Jean) Brown of Orlando, FL, and Lisa (Michael) Gabbay of New York, NY; two grandchildren, Eric (Jessica) Brown of Orlando, and Kevin Brown of Los Angeles, CA; one great-grandchild, Ansley Brown of Orlando; three sisters, Lorrayne (J.D.) Jones of Madisonville, KY, Faye (John) Saville of Scotia, NY, and Joyce (Doug) Alvey of Franklin, KY; a sister-in-law, Virginia Brown of Owensboro; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, June 12, 2010, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens, with Military Honors by VFW Post 696. Visitation will be 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday and after 8:30 AM Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buena Vista Baptist Church, 119 West 24th Street, Owensboro, KY 42301, or Hospice of Western Kentucky, 3419 Wathens Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301.
