Dorothy Ellen McCarty

Dorothy E. Wilkerson McCarty, 94, of Owensboro, passed away Friday, December 5, 2025, at her home. She was born in Breckenridge County to the late Truman and Nancy Rachel Wilkerson.

Mrs. McCarty was blessed with a large family and treasured her countless hours with them, especially the many grandchildren. She was a dedicated homemaker and enjoyed canning food to provide wholesome meals. Dorothy was a devout Christian who read her Bible diligently and was a longtime member of Harmony Baptist Church. In her later years, Dorothy enjoyed the company of her dogs: Tippy, Skittles and most recently, Charlie.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Charles Henry "Buck" McCarty in 2016; two daughters, Debra McCarty and Carolyn Allgood; a son, Larry McCarty; granddaughters, Crystal Lucas and Sheena McCarty; great-granddaughters, Stacy Michelle Simpson and Makayla Bowen; great-great-grandchild, Jayden Corley; sisters, Lela Dawson and Annie Poole; and a brother, William Wilkerson.

Mrs. McCarty is survived by her children, Dessie Shelton (Tony) of Lewisport, Charles Mitchell McCarty (Vonna) of Cloverport, Nancy Marlene Smiley (John) of Owensboro, Kenneth McCarty (Sarah) of Hawesville, Anna Hamilton (Mike) of Lewisport, John "J.T." McCarty of Maceo and Barbara McCarty of Maceo; 28 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Dawson.

The funeral service will be at 2:00, Wednesday, December 10 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will follow in Iron Ore Hill Cemetery at Yelvington. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM and Wednesday from 11:00 AM until the time of service.
