Dorothy Jean Bivins Henderson, 90, passed away Saturday, July 4, 2015 while under the excellent and loving care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. Dorothy was born February 2, 1925 in Owensboro, KY, daughter of the late Lester and Sophia Bittel Bivins.
She is preceded in death by her late husband of 62 years, Michael T. Henderson on April 18, 2009, her parents, siblings, Joseph Lester Bivins, Mary Catherine Bivins, George Bivins, and Bettye Ann Thompson.
Dorothy is survived by her "favorite sons," Bill Henderson (Beth) of Cincinnati, OH, Tom Henderson (Debbie) of Woodstock, GA, and Steve Henderson (Jacksonville, FL) and daughters Barbara Harrison of Palm Desert, CA, and Becky McCarty (Wayne) of Owensboro, KY, as well as her 14 grandchildren, Cara Henderson Spencer (Jason), Stephanie Henderson Flake (Bryan), Lisa Henderson, Steven Henderson (Sara), Kenny Harrison (Megan), Jean Owen (Andy), John Calhoun, Jr. (Michelle), Jim Calhoun, Sarah Hulsey (Jody), Kristina Doss (Clayton), Phillip Henderson (Angelina), Samantha Henderson, Michael Henderson, and Leigh Ann Haner (Marc). Her greatest enjoyment came from her 21 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brothers, Bobby Bivins, Brother Raban Bivins, O.S.B., and sister, Jane Payne, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy graduated from St. Joseph's High School and attended Brescia College. She taught at St. Pius X and Blessed Mother Parish Schools and was a bookkeeper for Earle's Men Shop. Her proudest achievements came from serving as former President of the Daviess County Homemakers Association, Member of State Board of Directors for Kentucky Extension Homemakers, President, Board Member and volunteer for the Owensboro Health Volunteers Auxiliary and Golden Partners. She was an active member and volunteer of Saints Joseph and Paul Parish.
Dorothy loved to travel with her husband not only here in the United States to visit family and their infamous bus trips through Owensboro Health's Golden Partners, but abroad with trips to the Philippines, Guam, Hawaii, Australia and her personal favorite Switzerland. She was an avid reader, loved embroidering, quilting, and playing solitaire.
Services are at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Saints Joseph and Paul Catholic Church, with Father Carl McCarthy officiating with final resting place at Resurrection Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, with prayers at 7:00p.m. and from 8:30-9:30 A.M. Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
