Dorothy Lea "Dot" Best Berry, 88, died January 12, 2016 under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. She was born in Daviess County on May 11, 1927 to the late Walter T. Best and Katie Lea Adelman Best. She was predeceased by her husband, Patrick H. Berry, who died in 2009 and siblings Edward Best, Miriam Rouse and Mickey Best. She is survived by sisters Lena Lovan, Bud Best, Helen Leib, Jean Ann Griffin, Dick Best and Jerry Best.
A fourth generation Daviess Countian and the fifth of ten children, Dot was a devoted wife, mother, grandparent and great-grandparent. She cared for her husband for the ten years he suffered with Alzheimer's disease. She led an active, creative and energetic life that she shared with many friends and family. She made more than a hundred quilts, completed countless works of needlepoint, knitting and crochet. She had a knack for gardening and she was learning to paint. She was an avid reader, traveled to Europe, but she enjoyed being home most of all.
For many years she volunteered at the Owensboro Museum of Science and History. She was active in the Telephone Pioneers Christmas Wish program. She enjoyed her many friends and she played a mean game of ping pong. She enjoyed basketball (particularly University of Kentucky games), bridge, Sudoku and crossword puzzles. While bedridden in her final days, she taught a caregiver how to knit.
She graduated from Daviess County High School where she was a cheerleader for the top-rated 1945 basketball team. She was cast in the junior and senior play.
She is survived by sons Phil Berry (Laura) of Louisville, Rodney Berry (Joanne) of Owensboro, grandchildren Brooke Middleton (Dan) of Tampa, Philip Benjamin Berry (Laura) of Arlington, Texas, Joseph Berry of Owensboro, Adam Berry of Brooklyn, New York, and great-grandchildren Georgia and Andy Berry. She and her family were deeply appreciative of her devoted caregivers.
