Doris W. Smith, 91, of Philpot, passed away Friday, May 29, 2026, at her home while under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. She was born on April 30, 1935, in East Chicago, Indiana, to the late Ernie and Ida Greer Westerfield.
Doris was a devoted member of Owensboro Church of Christ for over 50 years, along with her husband John. She was retired from General Electric after 17 years of service, and worked in retail for 20 years, including Oney’s Shoes for 15 years and Shoe Stop for 4 years. Doris and her husband also were vital in reviving the original Farmer’s Market and continued with them for 26 years. She also loved working in her garden.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, John Tucker Smith in 2020; and her brothers, Onel Otto Westerfield in 1985 and Riley D. Westerfield in 1960.
Doris is survived by her daughters, Patricia (David) Alsip, of Philpot, and Sheila (Mike) Hines, of Magnolia, KY; her 22 grandchildren, John David (Mary) Alsip, Joshua (Serenity) Alsip, Logan (Kate) Hines, Grayland (Tara Woodburn) Hines, Shaylene (Brian) Swihart, Elsie Alsip, Dalton (Molly Hudson) Alsip, Teddy Morton, Logan (Haley) Eitel, Amelia Hines, Vaughn Hines, Fiona Hines, Kylie Woodburn, Kelsey Woodburn, Kaelyn Woodburn, Ava Hines, Aiden Eitel, Beckham Eitel, Clio Eitel, Lily Eitel, Clara Swihart, and Finley Swihart; also, several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Doris will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday June 3, 2026, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Pastor Jimmy Bunch officiating. Burial to follow in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 9 until 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
