Doris Coomes Barber Modist, 70, of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, passed away on August 08, 2025. She was born on April 20, 1955 in Daviess County, Ky. to the late Joseph Alphonsus Coomes and Teresa Helen Boteler Coomes. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Mark Modist; 5 of her 9 siblings, Joseph Dennis Coomes, David Eugene Coomes, Thomas Anthony Coomes, Ivan Glenn Coomes and Paul Francis Coomes; sister-in-law, Brenda Coomes; and niece Kelley Coomes.
Doris graduated from Daviess County High School in 1973 and then from Western Kentucky University with a Bachelor’s degree. She practiced as a dental hygienist for over 25 years starting in Owensboro, Kentucky and then in Ft. Lauderdale. Doris moved to Ft. Lauderdale around 1994 to be with the love of her life, Mark Modist, after 6 months of making weekend trips to Florida to see him. They were married in 2005, in a “Surprise” proposal and wedding in Costa Rica, and then renewed their vows with a beautiful wedding in Ft. Lauderdale on May 02, 2009, with all their family and friends in attendance.
Doris was an avid snow skier and skied every winter in Colorado up until just a few years ago. She was very interested in Geography. She loved to read about places all over the world and visited many of them including Europe, Costa Rica, China, South Africa, Australia and many more.
Doris was always generous in opening her home for visits from all the family including nieces and nephews, and to her friends when they visited Florida. We will miss our sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend.
After Mark passed away, all her family wanted Doris to come home to Kentucky, but she always said “Florida is my home”! So, she died exactly where she wanted to be.
Doris is survived by her 4 sisters, Joyce Ann (Paul) Lambert, Lois Marie (Charles) Hoskins, Rita Faye (Billly) Wood and Jane Anita Coomes; sister-in-laws Mary Goretti Coomes and Lou Robertson, all of Owensboro, Ky.; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces & nephews; step-son, Matthew Modist; and her constant companion “Bentley”, her Goldendoodle.
The Funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Sunday, August 31, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Father Ray Clark officiating. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12 noon until the time of the service Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231, Messages and condolences to the family can be shared at www.glenncares.com
