Doris Jean Layton

Doris Jean Layton, 80, of Owensboro, entered into eternal peace on December 7, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 3, 1934 in Evansville to the late Ambrose Ross and Ethel Compton Morris. Doris was a member of Harvest Baptist Temple. She also taught Sunday school for 25 years, kept children in the church nursery and was a member of the church's women's group. Doris was a great cook who also enjoyed watching UK Basketball. Most of all Doris loved spending time with her family, especially playing with her grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Phelps; sister, Marilyn Rexing; brother, Clarence Morris; half-brother, Bill McMurray; and half-sisters, Ester Sinclare and Jean Palmer.

Survivors include her loving husband of 46 years, Donnie Carrol Layton; sons, Roddie Lee (Karen) Shelton and Eddie Ray (Brenda) Shelton; daughter, Donna Carol Grant; sister, Nancy Morris White; grandchildren; Shawn Phelps, Shelley Phelps Howell, Lee Shelton, Jason Shelton, Daniel Shelton, David Shelton, Chuck Shelton, Matthew Shelton, Tyler Grant and Gracie Grant; and 12 great-grandchildren

Service will be 11 am Wednesday December 10, 2014 at Harvest Baptist Temple with Pastor Greg Dowdy officiating. Burial will follow at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2-8 pm on Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and after 9 on Wednesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to The American Diabetic Association or the Harvest Temple Baptist Church Building Fund.
