Donald Butler

Donald A. Quack Butler, 84, of Owensboro, died Friday, October 18, 2002 at Owensboro Mercy Health System.

The Ironton, Ohio native was a member of the Kentucky Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission, was a graduate of Georgetown College, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and held a Masters degree from the University of Kentucky. He was a member of First Baptist Church and an original member of the Maverick Sunday school class.

Mr. Butler was highly involved in athletics. He was the head basketball coach at Campbellsville College in 1949 when the school won the Division III national championship in 1949. For many years, he was a prot of Coach Adolph Rupp of the University, playing an active and productive role recruiting top players to the championship program. He served as the State Commissioner of Kentucky Babe Ruth Baseball for 52 years. Mr. Butler was indicted into three halls of fame. They were the International Babe Ruth Baseball Hall of Fame, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, and the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. He was the only non-school employee to ever be inducted into the latter two. He was an Eagle Scout.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Anna Lois Butler, a son, Robert A. Butler of New York, NY, a daughter, Mary Alice Rockhold of Bowling Green, KY, and two grandchildren.

Services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Visitation is from 2 until 8 p.m. Monday at Glenn Funeral Home. Entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Donald A. Butler Scholarship Fund.
