Donald Ray Blan

April 17, 1933 — August 5, 2013

Donald Ray Blan, 80, of Owensboro died on August 5, 2013 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born in Owensboro to the late Wilbur Edward and Mary Pearl Winkler and later adopted by the late Charles Irvin and Margaret Elizabeth Blan.

He attended St. Francis Academy and Catholic High School before earning a history degree from Brescia University. Don served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956.

He retired in 1990 after 30 years with the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

Don was very active with Boy Scouts of America where he served in many leadership roles including Assistant Scoutmaster. He was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award for his work with scouts. Don also loved plastic modeling. He was a member of the International Plastic Modelers Society for 30 years and his experience on the subject led him to be the editor of Jolly's Debrief, a newsletter dedicated to the hobby. Don also worked part time at Hobby Town USA where he enjoyed helping others learn the craft.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Brenda Gayle Blan in 2002.

Don is survived by three children, Donald Ray Blan, Jr. (Kristine) of Dallas, TX, Patricia Lynn Piraino (Steven) of Chicago; and David Edward Blan (Sarah) of Portland, OR; and ten grandchildren; step sister, Anice Cooper of Owensboro; and step brother, Edward Winkler (Alta) of Owensboro.

The funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Fr. Julian Ibemere will officiate and entombment will be at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be on Friday from 3-8 PM (with prayers at 6 PM) and on Saturday after 9 AM at the funeral home.
