Don Lashbrook, 81, of Habit died Thursday, December 24, 2009 at his home following a brief illness. His parents, Leadrew Lashbrook and Thelma Westerfield Lashbrook, preceded him in death as did a baby daughter, Lee Ann and a sister, Nadine Wiggington. Don grew up in the community of Pleasant Ridge. He was a retired dairy farmer, living and farming his farm on Millers Mill Road (Highway 762) just east of the Habit Community, where he moved after marrying Norma Taylor of Habit on June 16, 1948 at Bethabara Baptist Church, where they have remained active members. For decades he was a deacon and the church clerk and headed the church cemetery committee. He served for many years on the boards of directors of Southern States Co-op and the Kentucky Farm Bureau. During the years he operated a dairy farm, he was actively involved with the Kentucky Holstein Association. Don worked with youth in the 4-H program and was an avid quail, turkey, and deer hunter, training his many hunting dogs.
Don was a graduate of Daviess County High School and loved basketball, having been a member of the schools famed 1945 team. He played independent basketball for the E.M. Ford team, traveling to tournaments in Atlanta, and on the "Y" team coached by Willie Vogel. He also played baseball and softball, coaching the Bethabara Baptist Church team for many years. Don was inducted into the Daviess County High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
He and Norma celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in June of 2009. They have five children, Kathy Renn Miles and her husband Dr. Preston Miles of Danville, Don Miller Lashbrook of Parkland, FL, Marc Taylor Lashbrook of Habit, and John M. Lashbrook and his wife Kim of Owensboro. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; Dr. John Miles, Benjamin Taylor Miles, Ann Taylor Lashbrook, Melissa Carol Lashbrook, Lucy Miller Lashbrook, Miller Lashbrook, Joy Beth Dawahare and her husband Stephen, Sarah Postelwaite and her husband Kerry, Joshua Lashbrook, Lindsey Lashbrook, Lacy Lashbrook, Lucas Miller Lashbrook, Harper Lashbrook, Caroline Lashbrook, and Jack Lashbrook; three great-grandchildren, Hayden, Brooke, and Anna Dawahare; a sister, Jean Isbill of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
Services, officiated by Dr. Herschel Morgan, will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Bethabara Baptist Church. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. Sunday and from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may take the form of contributions to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering or Hospice of Western Kentucky.
