Denver G. Chancellor, 83, of 1612 Brentwood Drive, Owensboro, passed away Friday, April 2, 2004 at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born on December 11, 1920 in Centertown, Ky.to Alva & Alma Moore Chancellor. He graduated from Hartford High School and was president of his class and captain of the basketball team. He was retired from General Electric as manager of Hourly Employee Relations. He served as President of Local #783 Labor Union, President of the Owensboro Council of Labor, and Vice-President of the Kentucky State AFL-CIO. He was a member of the Kentucky State Safety Board and the Kentucky Unemployment Insurance Commission. He served on the City Planning and Adjustment Board, Mayors Commission on Human Relations, Mental Health, Red Cross, and YMCA Boards. He was active in local, state, and national politics. He served as city campaign manager for Lyndon B. Johnson and William H. Natcher. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. He was an active member of Hall Street Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School for 43 years, and was Moderator at the church for many years. He was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Meta Chancellor, and three brothers, Wendell, Aubrey, and Ray Chancellor.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Jean, two daughters, Karen Ramsay and Janet Jones, both of Owensboro, a son, Tom Hagerman of Ormond Beach, Fl, four grandsons, Jeremy Jones, Derek Jones, and Jeff Ramsay, all of Owensboro, and Scott Hagerman of Hawesville, a granddaughter, Shannon Wells of Owensboro, four great grandchildren, Zachary Hagerman, Krystin Wells, Morgan Wells, and Harlee Rone, two brothers, Max Chancellor and Bob Chancellor, both of Owensboro, and several nieces & nephews.
Services will be at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at the Hall Street Baptist Church with burial following at the Lone Star Cemetery in Ohio Co., Ky. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Monday and after 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home. Online condolences may be placed at www.glennfuneralhome.com.
