Dean G. Youngman

Dean G. Youngman, age 85, a long-time resident of Owensboro, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009 in Louisville, KY, after a brief illness.

He was born in Ames, IA and grew up in Silver Spring, MD and Santa Paula, CA. During service in the Army Air Corps in World War II while attending pre-flight training at Transylvania College in Lexington, KY, he met his future wife, Bette Carol Robinson. They were married in Owensboro on September 12, 1944 prior to his deployment to the China-Burma-India Theater where he served as a Hump Pilot through the end of the war. After release from active duty, he attended the University of Kentucky where he graduated in 1950 and moved to Owensboro.

He continued to serve as a pilot, initially in the Air Force Reserve and then the Kentucky Army National Guard, until his retirement from military service as a Major in 1972. He was also retired from General Electric and Owensboro National Bank. When he moved to Owensboro, he became a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for many years. The Youngman's moved to Louisville in 2006 and became members of the Westport Road Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Bette Robinson Youngman of Louisville; a sister, Shirley McLean of Keysville, VA; three children: MGRetired D. Allen (Alisa) Youngman of Alvaton, KY; Nancy (Ron) Van Hooser of Plano, Texas; and Vicky (David) Schweickhardt of Louisville; and five grandchildren: Sam, Brad (Emily) and Betsy Youngman; Paul Schweickhardt, Mindy (Chris) Flora; and two great-grandchildren.

Services, officiated by Rev. Paul Strahan, Dr. David Nelson, and Rev. Clarence Nemitz are at 12:00 noon Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Segs4Vets (www.draft.org), a charity providing Segway transporters for military amputees.
