David W. Smithson of Owensboro, son of John L Smithson and LaRue Williams, died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at the age of 86 after battling chronic kidney disease for over a year and a half. David was born and raised in Philpot; joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 and served on LST 812 during World War II and took part in the battle of Okinawa. David retired in 1991 after 35 years as an Owensboro Firefighter. He attended BridgePointe Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Duncan Smithson and Marvin Smithson.
Surviving is his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy Shifley Smithson; sons, Anthony (Toby) Smithson of Vernon Hills, IL, Denny (Julie) Smithson of Alpharetta, GA, and Mark (Susan) Smithson of Louisville; seven grandchildren; his brother, Jim (Lila) Smithson of Owensboro; and a sister, Minnie Johnson of Henderson.
Services are 2 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2012 in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Steve Cripps officiating followed by burial in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday and after 1 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
