David Eugene Cecil, 78, of Owensboro passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born February 7, 1948, to the late James Augustus and Rose Ann Payne Cecil. David was a St. Mary’s of the Woods High School graduate and briefly attended Brescia College before serving our country in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973.
David was an employee of BellSouth and then AT&T for an accumulation of over 30 years, and at times worked out of three different states to provide for and keep his family in their Philpot home. Alongside his telephone pioneer friends, he cooked in several Owensboro Barbecue Festivals in support of the Mary Kendall Home. When his working day was done, David was a gentleman farmer, caring for horses, cattle, and chickens. He raised fresh vegetables, lovingly delivering them in buckets and brown paper bags to family and friends. David found joy in purpose, especially in supporting his children in any and every imaginable interest, that included filling in as Santa Clause at County Heights Elementary School for 27 years. David also enjoyed running 5ks, oil and watercolor painting, sailing boats and training horses for trail riding with his daughters. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 58 years, Linda Christian Cecil; daughters, Holly Hast (Rob) and Jill Wiersma (Brian); siblings, Patty Wright, Sonny Cecil, Barbara Evans (Dennis), Mike Cecil (Ann), Bob Cecil, Joe Cecil (Barbara) and Kay Merimee (Steve); grandchildren, David Hast, Daniel Wiersma and Margot Wiersma; as well as many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for David will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 31, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be Friday, October 30, from 4p.m. until 7p.m. and Saturday, 9a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
