Darrel Whittaker, 64, of Owensboro, died on July 2, 2014 at his home. He was born on October 5, 1949 to the late William and Imogene Westerfield Whittaker. After leaving Ashland Oil with 10 years of service, Darrel and Becky opened Whittaker Guns in August of 1988 and built it into one of the largest privately owned gun shops in the United States with customers spanning the globe. Darrel was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. He was appointed Kentucky Colonel and enjoyed playing cards with his family and friends.

Darrel is survived by his wife of 40 years, Rebecca Bender Whittaker,a son; Chris Whittaker, a daughter; Cindy (Chuck) Whittaker Fulkerson, grandchildren; Shelby Gene Fulkerson, and Cooper Vernon Fulkerson, four sisters; Connie Schoonover, Sharon (Jerry) Benningfield, Sandy Bivins, Debbie (Jim) Benningfield, three brothers; David (Benita) Whittaker, Mike Whittaker, and Larry Whittaker, several loving nieces and nephews, and many friends and loyal customers.

Services will be at 1PM Friday July 4, 2014 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Father Ray Goetz will officiate the service. Visitation will be from 1-8 pm on Thursday July 3, 2014 and from 9am until the time of service at the funeral home. Darrel would prefer casual attire or "come as you are".

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be may to the Heartford House, National Rifle Association, and West Louisville Elementary Family Resource Center.
