Darrel Rex Austin

Darrel Rex Austin, a humble, gentle, kind man died peacefully surrounded by loved ones in Owensboro on November 2, 2018, at the age of 89. Darrel was born on May 13, 1929, to the late Charles and Effie Elizabeth Austin. He graduated from Mclean County High School then served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, and upon his return, he attended the Lockyear Business College in Evansville, IN. He then began working for the Social Security Administration, and over his 35-year career he became a manager of the Owensboro Social Security Office and was Awarded the Commissioners Citation Award, the most prestigious award for outstanding leadership contributions to the Social Security Administration in 1988. After retirement, Darrel started Disability and Medical Consultants, where he was a social security advocate. Darrel served in the position of Head Elder at Owensboro Seventh Day Adventist Church and taught Adult Sabbath School for many years. Darrel loved to golf three times a week with his brother Wayne, and on Sunday afternoons, more often than not, you could find him playing Rook on the Green River bank at Austin Acres.

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Warren Austin; Parents, Charles Clinton Austin, and Effie Elizabeth Austin; Grandson, Robert Austin Meythaler; brother, Charles Austin, and sister, Freda Tabor.

Survivors include his children, Teri Meythaler (Bob) and Gary Austin (Melissa Kiefer) of Atlanta, GA. Grandchildren, Nick Meythaler (Marion) of Charlottesville, VA, Bradford Meythaler (Lenox) of Huntsville, AL, Chris Austin (Maggie) of Nashville, TN and Tyler Austin (Jamie) of Alvaton, KY, brother and best friend Wayne Austin (Leona) of Calhoun, KY, Beth Austin of Bowling Green and great-granddaughters, Lachlan, Miller, Gigi, and Lucie Cole.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Robert Austin Meythaler Scholarship Fund envelopes will be available at the funeral home.


The funeral service will be 2 pm Monday, November 5, 2018, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Pastor Michael Foraker and Pastor Kevin Shearer officiating. Visitation begins at 11 am on Monday. Burial with military honors will be at Calhoun Cemetery
