Coach Bruce Embry

Coach Bruce Embry, 63, of Owensboro passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2005 at the Owensboro Medical Health System. Born in Daviess County on June 26, 1941, Mr. Embry was the son of the late Yondell M. Embry and Wannetta Amby Payne Embry. He was a member of St Stephen Cathedral. Mr. Embry taught at Owenbsoro Catholic High School from 1968 to 2004. During his tenure at OCHS, he taught Mythology and English and was the head and assistant boys basketball coach; head and assistant girls basketball coach; assistant football coach; golf coach (winning KY Coach of the Year honors); track coach, athletic director; was the DARE program sponsor; created the OCHS SMART program; was the founder of the OCHS Project Graduation Program; organized flag runs; sponsored the Western KY Leadership Conference; assisted with senior retreats; and established the Senior Snow Ball Dinner tradition. He was also the unofficial OCHS match maker and always had an open door policy at the school. Mr. Embry had a part in the never-released
film titled Marshall of Windy Hollow. Mr. Embry also enjoyed skeet, trapshooting, and sporting clays. He was a state champion in all and competed nationally. Lastly, he was noted for his generosity.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Janie Patterson Embry; three daughters and sons-in-law, Angel and Terry Payne, Cynthia and Bruce Galloway, and Elizabeth and Rob Burnett all of Owensboro; and five grandchildren, Andrew Payne, Zachary Galloway, Joshua Galloway, Bethany Galloway, and Meredith Burnett all of Owensboro; and countless OCHS students and former students whose lives he touched.

Funeral services are 2 P.M. Saturday at St Stephen Cathedral with burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home from 2-8 P.M. on Friday and from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Owensboro Catholic High School, Coach Bruce Embry Memorial Fund.
