Clara Johnson

Maple Mount Sister Clara (Joseph Clara) Johnson, 66, an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph, died June 12, 2014 at Mount Saint Joseph, in her 47th year of religious life. She was born in Owensboro, the daughter of the late Ruth Agnes Higdon Johnson and Justin Aloysius Johnson.

Sister Clara was a kind and gentle woman, always concerned about caring for others. She fought an inspiring and brave battle with cancer with nary a complaint.

An educator for more than 20 years, she served as librarian and teacher at Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Maple Mount (1978-83). She also served as librarian, teacher and parish minister elsewhere in Kentucky and in New Mexico. From 1993-2011, she ministered as secretary and bookkeeper at the Sister Visitor Center in Louisville.

Survivors include six sisters, Mary Ann Kurz, Yvonne Fulenwider, Theresa Haire and Eileen Mattingly, all of Owensboro, Cecilia Harnden, Bradenton, Fla., and Dolores Hagan, Hudson; two brothers, Charles Gregory Johnson, Hawesville, and James Leon Johnson, Owensboro; nieces and nephews, and the members of her religious community.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Mount Saint Joseph, where visitation will begin Monday at 4 p.m., with a wake service following at 6:30 p.m. Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, Owensboro, is in charge of arrangements.
