Clara Ellen Green , 94, of Owensboro passed away at her home Thursday, June 15. The former Clara Ellen McCammon, she was born in Sellersburg, IN. July 24, 1911, one of ten children of the late Rosa Ellen and Walter McCammon. Mrs. Green moved to Owensboro from Louisville in 1940 with her husband, attorney, B.C. Green. She was a member of the First Christian Church and served as Church Secretary from 1947 until her retirement in 1974. She was active in the denomination on a local and state level and was one of the first women to be elected as an Elder by the church.
Mrs. Green was also active in civic affairs. She was twice President of the Board of Directors of the Owensboro YMCA; was on the Board of Directors of the Womans Auxilary in the early days of the Wendell Foster Center; and was a member of the Womans Club; and a Kentucky Colonel. In 1954, she was selected by Beta Sigma Phi, a professional Womens Sorority, as Owensboros First Lady of the Year, an award designed to recognize women in leadership roles in the community. Following her retirement from First Christian Church, She served as a volunteer chaplains assistant at the Owensboro Daviess County Hospital for 10 years.
Preceding her in death was her husband of 59 years, B.C. Green.
Survivors include her daughters, Suzette Nunley and her husband Nathan of Owensboro and Wanda Rice and her husband Maitland of Morgantown; her son, Earl Mac Green of Louisville; her grandchildren, Scott Nunley, Kristin Callis, Jeff Rice, and Tim Rice, Kerri Bruckner , Lisa Rice, Darren Rice, and Stephen Rice; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Haertel of New Albany; IN, and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Boyd .and Juanita Green of Shelbyville.
Services are 11:30 A.M. Monday, June 19, 2006 at First Christian Church, officiated by the Rev. Phillip Curran. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home from 1-6 P.M. Sunday, and from 9 to 11 A.M. Monday. Entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
