Charles "Chuck" J. Szelag, 75, of Owensboro, passed away on August 8, 2024, at Norton Hospital in Louisville. Charles was born in Chicago on May 15, 1949, to the late Henry and Vivian Pirschel Szelag. Chuck began his professional journey in purchasing with Carlisle SynTec Systems, where his career took him to Pennsylvania for training. During this time, he met the love of his life, Barb Carns, on a blind date. Their connection was immediate, and they soon married.
Throughout their life together, Chuck's career led them to various locations. After spending time in Illinois, they returned to Pennsylvania to be closer to Barb's family. Eventually, they made their home in Owensboro, Kentucky. Chuck worked for a period in Indiana before finding his final professional role at Premium Allied Tool, from which he retired.
Chuck was an avid angler who found joy in fishing wherever he could, but his favorite fishing trips were those to Canada with his high school buddies Jim and Marty, where he could fully indulge in his passion. He also deeply loved golf, a hobby he shared with his wife, Barb. The two often spent time together on the golf course, enjoying each other's company on the links.
As a native of Chicago, Chuck was a devoted fan of the city's sports teams, including the Cubs, Bulls, and Blackhawks. His love for history, especially the Civil War, led him to develop a particular fondness for visiting Gettysburg.
Chuck was also talented in the kitchen and was known for his exceptional soups, which became a favorite among friends and family. Music was another important aspect of his life, with a particular fondness for tunes from the 1950s and 60s, and he cherished attending concerts with Barb.
Chuck will be remembered for his dedication to his work, his love for Barb, and the life they built together.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Smith.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 43 years, Barb Carns Szelag; sister, Cathy Norton; nephews, Dan Smith, Rick Smith, Scott Smith, Doug Smith, Sean Norton, and Tyler Carns; nieces, Dawn Hackett, Lindsay Carns, and Alicia Barnouski; mother-in-law Linda Carns, and brother-in-law Rick Carns (Patty).
The memorial service for Chuck Szelag will be at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.
