Charles E. Payne, 84, of Knottsville passed away Monday, October 6, 2008 at the Owensboro Medical Health System. Born July 25, 1924, Mr. Payne was the son of the late Paul and Mabel Mattingly Payne; was a farmer and a member of St. William Catholic Church where he was a Eucharistic minister. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters where he received four Bronze Service Stars, the WWII Victory medal, and was awarded the Meritorious Unit Award with Co 18, 88th Infantry Division. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen Mattingly Payne in 1975; and a daughter, Judy Marie Payne in 1946.
He is survived by his sons, Darrell Payne and wife Mary Lou of Knottsville, and Joseph C. Payne of Knottsville; a daughter, Judy Ann Oelze and husband Bill of Owensboro; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a sister, Corine Pearl of Owensboro.
Services are at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at St. William Catholic Church followed by burial in the St. William Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home with prayers at 7:00 p.m., and from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
