Charles Elbert Owen

Rev. Charles Elbert Owen, 72, of Owensboro passed away Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at his home. Born in Akersville, KY in Monroe County, Rev. Owen was a man of many interests and enthusiasms. He was a graduate of Western Kentucky University and the Emory University School of Theology. In his career as an ordained minister he served United Methodist churches throughout the former Louisville Conference which encompassed all of western Kentucky. His other pursuits included teaching school, driving a tour bus for NASA during the Apollo Project, and owning an orange grove He had been the owner of The Pier Hotel and its Weird Beard Coffee Shop in Daytona Beach and Owen Motors in Moseleyville. Chuck was a fan of motorsports, participating as an oval track driver at Windy Hollow Speedway and Kentucky Motor Speedway, and was an ardent motorcycle enthusiast. He was preceded in death by his father, Garnett Owen.

His surviving family include his mother, Olane Bray Owen of Bowling Green; his children, Andy Owen and his wife Jean of Owensboro, Angie Schwenk and her husband Chris of Dresher, PA, and Gloria Owen of Bowling Green; his grandchildren, Oliver Owen of Owensboro and Owen Schwenk of Dresher, PA; and his sisters, Nell Glass of Prospect and Belmarie Walton of Bowling Green.

The funeral service for Rev. Owen will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where visitation will be from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday. The service of committal and burial will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, KY.
