Charles 'Charlie' Evans, 59, passed away of Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS) Friday, October 28, 2016 at Red Banks Nursing Home. Charlie was a graduate of Henderson County High School (1975) and from Indiana State University – Evansville (now USI) (1980) receiving a bachelor degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Physical Education. He had attended Cumberland College his freshmen year and University of Kentucky his sophomore year before returning to ISUE to complete his degree closer to home. Charlie then went on to earn a Master's degree in Physical Education from Western Kentucky University and received his Rank I in School Administration.
Charlie served as a teacher and coach in the Henderson County School System for over 25 years. Throughout his career, he worked at South Junior High School and Cairo, Smith Mills, South Heights and 7th Street elementary schools. A highlight of his career was coaching the boys' and girls' basketball teams at South Junior High from 1982 to 1988. During that time, Charlie coached the 7th grade boys' team who went undefeated for six seasons and one season his team averaged 72 points per game. He enjoyed coaching so much that he spent many summers organizing and teaching at basketball camps.
Charlie was a great athlete in his own right. In high school, he played for the Colonels basketball team both his freshman and senior years. He also played collegiate basketball his freshman year at Cumberland College. Later in his life during a Henderson County men's independent league basketball game, he scored 72 points in one game which outscored the opposing team setting a single-game scoring record in Henderson. In addition, he had a love for softball, playing both fast pitch and slow pitch for a number of years. In 1980, he played short stop for the Knight's Mobile Home of Robards which won the Kentucky State Championship title in fast pitch and in 1983, he played on Larry's Sunoco Slow Pitch team, which won a slow pitch state championship.
Outside of sports, Charlie was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved crappie fishing on Kentucky Lake and hunting for doves on his family farm in Robards. He also loved thoroughbred horse racing, playing cards, and watching University of Kentucky basketball games. Throughout his life in Henderson, he was a Methodist and attended First Methodist, Robards Methodist, and, also Chapel Hill UMC.
