Charles Robert “Bob” Bivins, 91, of Owensboro, passed away Thursday, June 13, at the Carmel Home. He was born January 21, 1933, to the late Lester and Sophia Bivins. Bob was a current member of Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church and previous member of St. Pius X for many years, where he received the Sophia Award for his volunteer work at the Daniel Pitino Shelter. He retired from BellSouth in 1995 after 39 years of loyal service and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Bob was also the last BellSouth employee in Kentucky to work on a “party line”. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, instilling the importance of work ethic in his six children. Beyond his professional life, Bob proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, demonstrating unwavering devotion to his country. In his leisure time, Bob enjoyed traveling extensively. With his wife Norma, and friends, Bill and Katherine Thomas by his side, he explored every state in the country except Alaska. These shared adventures created unforgettable memories that will forever be treasured. Bob was an avid UK basketball fan and enjoyed playing cards and square dancing. Most of all, Bob loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph Bivins, George Bivins, and Bro. Raban Bivins; and three sisters, Catherine Bivins, Bettye Thompson, and Dorothy Henderson.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 68 years, Norma Jean Bivins; children, Darrell Bivins, of Texas, Gary Bivins, Paula Leet (Wendell), of Georgia, Charlotte Thompson (Mark), Rick Bivins (Lisa), and Connie Russelburg (Tim); sister, Janie Payne; grandchildren, Mallory Johns, Kelsey Anderson, Chad Gray, Drew Gray, Matt Gray, Adam Leet, Matt Leet, Lindsay Newton, Christopher Thompson, Ryan Thompson, Eric Thompson, Andrew Thompson, Melissa Bivins, Michelle Valego, Kristin Aull, John Bivins, Clare Bivins, Luke Bivins, Rachel Hamilton, Kaylee Russelburg, and Sam Russelburg; as well as 32 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
