Carl E. Melander, 89, of Owensboro, passed away on October 16, 2026, at the Western Kentucky Veterans Center. He was born on August 4, 1937, in Hennepin County, Minnesota, to the late Carl R. and Eunice Aney Melander.
Carl proudly served his country in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division.
There wasn’t much Carl couldn’t do with his hands. He began his career as a carpenter, and after a few years working in the coal mines, he went back to the trade he loved and finished his career right where it started. He was never one to sit still. If someone needed help, Carl showed up, and he would take on just about any project that came his way.
Carl loved his family. Although he lived many miles from most of them, he never missed life’s big moments, from weddings to graduations, and he was always ready to come help with a project around the house. He especially loved his time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. To them he was Grampy, which, depending on the day, sometimes came out as Grumpy.
Carl had a quick, sarcastic wit and was always up for a good joke. His family will tell you he was also a gifted storyteller who never let the facts get in the way of a good story, and you could never be quite sure when he was pulling your leg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Bryce W. Newton.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Carla Newton (Mark) and Mary Pflieger (Carl); son, Mark Melander; companion, Marilyn Enos; brother, Kurt Melander (Robin); grandchildren, Bethanie, Joy, Jonna, Ashby, Krista, Samuel, and Brodie; and several great-grandchildren.
The memorial service for Carl Melander will be at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow in Christ Chapel at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Ronald McDonald House Louisville, 550 S. First St., Louisville, KY 40202.
