Captain Omer C. Harpe, Jr., 83, of Owensboro, passed away Wednesday, October 22 under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. He was born in Addison, Kentucky to the late Captain Omer C. Harpe, Sr. and Jessie Little Harpe.
Captain Harpe was a legend when it came to boats and the river. He spent more than 50 years in roles that included captain of a tow boat and captain of the port. Even in retirement, he came back to pilot boats part time until just a few years ago. He had attended Blessed Mother Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Lucy Marie Lanham Harpe in 2020.
Mr. Harpe is survived by his son, Kenny Clay Harpe of Owensboro; a sister, Mary Robbins; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 12:00 PM, Monday, October 27 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory where visitation will be from 11:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will be at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.
