C. A. "Ottie" Pantle, Jr., farmer, community, and agriculture leader passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was 77. Mr. Pantle was born in Owensboro and graduated from Daviess County High School in 1955. In 1961 he graduated from the University of Kentucky and married the former Jane Clark, returned to Daviess County, bought their house on the hill and began farming. Mr. Pantle was the 2001 recipient of the University of Kentucky Thomas Poe Cooper Award for distinguished farm leadership and the Kentucky Gamma Sigma Outstanding Alumni award, being the first person to receive both awards at the same time. He was also recognized with the Kentucky Farm Bureau Distinguished Service Award, the Kentucky Association of County Agricultural Agents excellence in agriculture award, and the Soil Conservation Districts of Kentucky honor award for 50 years service. He was recognized with the Kentucky Vegetable Growers C.R. Roberts award for outstanding service and the Distinguished Service Award from the Daviess County Conservation District Board for his service as chairman for 18 years. Mr. Pantle served as the Kentucky Horticultural president for 6 years and the Daviess County Agricultural Development Council for 12 years. He was also recognized with the Daviess County Beef Cattle Founders Award and the Outstanding Young Farmers Award.

A member of the Daviess County Lions Club, he served as its president for 2 years , on the Fair Board for 13 years, and received the clubs Melvin Jones Fellow award for dedicated humanitarian service. He was a 36 year member of the Kentucky Vegetable Growers Association, serving as president for 2 years. He also served on the boards of The Kentucky Pork Producers, the Kentucky Cattlemen, and the Kentucky State Farm Service Agency. He was president of the Daviess County Farm Bureau president several times. The Kentucky State FFA recognized him with the Star Farmer Award and the Courier Journal named him the Outstanding FFA Farmer of the Year. Mr. Pantle was a 35 year member of the Daviess County Adjustment board, serving as chairman for 4 of them. He was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Christian Adam Pantle and Edith Burton Pantle.

Mr. Pantle is survived by his wife, Jane Clark Pantle; his children, Jane Hunter Julian and her husband Bret and Chris A. Pantle, III; and his grandchildren, Hunter Anne Julian and Adam Julian, all of Owensboro.

The funeral service for Mr. Pantle will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Music Fund of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church or the Owensboro Humane Society.
