Bruce A. Sayre

Bruce A. Sayre, 93, of Owensboro passed away Monday, April 6, 2015 in the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. Born in Lexington, KY the son of the late Fabius J. and Martha Todd Sayre, he graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelors of Science in Business. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps early in World War II and was engaged in combat on Iwo Jima, the battles of Roi and Namur, the Kwajalein Atoll, the Marshall Islands, and Saipan. Wounded in action, he was awarded two Purple Hearts, the first of which was pinned on his uniform by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was a life long member and local commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Mr. Sayre was actively involved in veterans affairs as member of the American Legion, V.F.W., Disabled American Veterans, and Amvets, which he served as a board member. He served for three years as Chairman of the Daviess County Veterans Affairs Committee and was actively involved with the establishment of the Charles Shelton Memorial. Mr. Sayre was a retired letter carrier with the United States Postal Service following a career of 35 years, was president of the Western Kentucky Letter Carriers, and was a member of the board of directors of the Owensboro Federal Credit Union. He was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, its Open Door Sunday school class and had served on the administrative board of the church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children Betty Ruth Sayre, his second wife Agnes Goetz Sayre, and his third wife Genevieve Sayre; a son, B. Phillip Sayre; his sisters Ruth Conleton and Edna Fishback; and his brothers, Robert Sayre, Frank Sayre, Carlisle Sayre, and William Sayre.

Mr. Sayre is survived by his children Elaine Doolittle and her husband Patrick of Owensboro and the Rev. Wayne Sayre and his wife Betty of Russellville.

The funeral service for Mr. Sayre will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will be in Rosehill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Western Kentucky, Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, or the E-Book Program at the Daviess County Public Library.
