Bobby Tyler Norris

June 16, 1938 — November 24, 2016

Bobby Tyler Norris, 78, of Owensboro, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2016 at his home. He was born in Stanley, KY to the late Joseph Marshall and Eddie Pennington Norris.

Bobby retired from the Owensboro Police Department, the U.S. Marshal's Office and Zielinski Coal Co.
His first love was his time with OPD and interaction with the community he served. As a part of his service he was recognized for several heroic and life-saving actions. Bobby's tenure as a Federal Marshal included the transportation of many well-known criminals, including members of the Manson Family, Lynnette "Sqeaky" Fromme (attempted assassination of President Ford) and Timothy Leary. After his law enforcement years he found a new passion within the coal industry as a leasing agent. Working with his son, Rob, they core drilled in much of Western Kentucky, Southern Indiana and Ohio. Bobby participated in several community service organizations including Past-President of the Fraternal Order of Police, board member of the Police and Firemen's Pension Board and Good Fellows. He was also a member of Bellevue Baptist Church. His hobbies included fishing, U.K. Basketball and NASCAR. In his early years he even had occasion to chase Darrell Waltrip around Daviess County. He was very sociable and generous, never meeting a stranger. Bobby had a habit of helping stranded motorists and was always willing to help anyone in need.

In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by his brother, GySgt. William Joseph Norris.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Brenda Joyce Lee Norris; a daughter, Sondra N. Mattingly (Mike) of Sacramento, CA; sons, Robbie S. Norris and Cliff Norris, both of Owensboro; sisters, Doris Schrecker, Donna Montalvo, and Rita Norris Mauzy; a brother, Charles "Boots" Norris; sister-in-law, Lucille Norris Contarino; grandchildren, Jonathon Huff, Hailey Norris, Andrea Mattingly, Tyler Mattingly; great-grandchildren, Colton Huff, Bailey Norris, Kaitlyn, Kierra and Olivia Collins and Isaiah Crowe; and a host of cherished nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be at 2 PM Saturday, December 3 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be Friday from 2 until 8 PM and Saturday after 12 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to GySgt. William Joseph Norris Marine Corp League Detachment #804 Toys for Tots Program with checks made payable to Toys for Tots, 4100 Kipling Dr. Owensboro, KY 42303.
