Bobby Joe Johnson

Bobby Joe Johnson, 75, of Owensboro passed away Monday, June 27, 2011 at the Owensboro Medical Health System. Born in Greenville, KY on July 4, 1935, he was the son of the late Dallas and Edna Armstrong Johnson; retired from construction work; was a founding member of Southside Wesleyan Church where he was an Elder for more than 30 years and was instrumental in the renovation of the new church building. He was also a First Class Petty Officer and Naval Reserve retiree. A faithful member of his church, Mr. Johnson was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was loved by everyone and "hero" to many. He loved mules and building wagons with one of his finest projects being a stagecoach for his grandchildren. A hard worker, Mr. Johnson built several homes and was a master teacher to help others with projects. His favorite pastime was reading his Bible and newspaper and watching westerns, the Gaither Homecoming videos, RFD TV, and UK basketball.

Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Deanie Mercer Johnson; a son, Mark (Kristi) Johnson of Owensboro; a daughter, Debbie (Mark) Wankel of Mt Carmel, IL; grandchildren, Matthew Johnson, Jordan (Rachel) Wankel, Milady (Chad) Griffin, Skyler Wankel, Austin Myers, Destiny Johnson, Heidy Wankel, Eden Wankel, and Joey Johnson; a great-grandchild, Berkeley Griffin; a sister, Barbara (Fred) Blanton of Owensboro; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Services are 11 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011 at Southside Wesleyan Church, 2804 Veach Rd, Owensboro, KY 42303 with Rev. John Fowler officiating followed by burial in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday and after 9 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory is handling arrangements.
