Blanche Catherine Millay Werne

Blanche Catherine Millay Werne, 100, left this life for the next on Saturday October 19, 2024, at the Heartford House while under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. She was born June 18, 1924, in Daviess County, the third of five children, to the late Joseph Benjamin “Benny” Millay and Anna Louise Payne Millay. Blanche was raised in the Pup Creek Community near Knotsville, attending St. William Catholic Church. She was stricken with a severe case of polio as a young girl. Although many activities were a challenge for her, she never let the disease prevent her from doing whatever she set her mind to.

Blanche began working at General Electric in Owensboro at the age of 18. She married Albert J. Werne on September 22, 1951. Together they made their home just south of Owensboro as lifelong members of St. Anthony Catholic Church. Blanche was active in various ministries at St. Anthony, including keeping the church beautifully adorned with flowers, mostly those she had grown herself. Blanche retired from GE/MPD after over 40 years of service.

Albert preceded her in death in 2010, after nearly 60 years of marriage. She continued on, in true Blanche fashion, with her involvement in the church, raising her garden, and maintaining her home.

Along with her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by all her siblings, Anna Mural Millay Johnson, Mary Magdalen Millay Knott, Nannie Mae Millay Aull, and Robert Louis Millay.

Blanche is survived by in laws, Robert E. “Bob” Aull and Joann Schartung Millay; many nieces and nephews; and her neighbors and church family friends who loved her dearly.

The funeral Mass for Blanche Werne will be 12 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at St. Anthony Catholic Church where visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass on Wednesday at the church. The burial will follow in St. Anthony Catholic Church Cemetery.

We would like to thank all who helped tend to Blanche when her body began to fail her over the past several months, including the exceptional staff at Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation, the Heartford House, and her church friends and family.
