Beverly Harper Wathen, 75, of Owensboro, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2012 at her home. She was born in Columbia, Maury County Tennessee, a daughter of the late Noble Anthony Harper and Elsie Cooper Harper. Mrs. Wathen enrolled in Western Kentucky University from which she graduated with a degree in music and moved to Owensboro to teach at Southern Junior High School. She did graduate work at George Peabody College. Mrs. Wathen was active in her church, in her community and in the pursuit of her personal interests. She served on the Board of Regents of Western Kentucky University, the Owensboro-Daviess County Urban Charter Commission, was a member of the Junior League of Owensboro, former chairman of the Hospital Gala and a graduate of Leadership Owensboro. A member of St. Stephen Cathedral, she was instrumental in the reestablishment of the church choir and its director. She was a genealogist, a duplicate bridge player and a former Realtor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Caroline Chapeze Oller, and her sisters, Carmen Key and Carolyn Grantham.
Mrs. Wathen is survived by her husband of almost 50 years, Edward Chapeze Wathen; her daughters, Susan F. Wathen of Owensboro and Anne Elizabeth Wathen of Gray Summit, MO; and her grandchildren, Adam Edward O'Donnel, Katherine Elizabeth O'Donnel, and Daniel Patrick O'Donnel, all of Gray Summit and Samuel Wathen Leucht of Owensboro.
The memorial service for Mrs. Wathen will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday and from 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Private interment will be in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Choir Fund of St. Stephen Cathedral or the Music Department of Western Kentucky University.
