Betty Foster Strode

April 13, 1920 — September 3, 2014

Betty Foster Strode, 94, of Stanley, passed away on September 3, 2014, at home surrounded by her loving family. Betty was born in Daviess County to the late Wm. Joseph and Lee Purdy Foster. She was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, former member of the Stanley United Methodist Church where she had played the organ for 60 years, member of the Homemakers Club of Stanley, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She attended Indiana University, Kentucky Wesleyan College in Winchester and graduated from the University of Kentucky. Betty taught first grade at Stanley Elementary School for over 20 years and was a member of the Daviess County Retired Teacher Association. She loved to dance with her number one dance partner, husband J.R. Strode, and they participated in many dance contests in Kentucky, Indiana, and Florida. She was a lifelong farmer, who also served as a 4H leader. Betty never meet a stranger, and was always the life of the party, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, J.R. Strode; son, William Curtis Strode; and grandson-in-law, Clay Campbell.

Survivors include her daughter, Sarah Lee Elliott of Stanley; son, Richard Strode and his wife Karen of Stanley; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; her brother, B.J. Foster of Owensboro; daughter-in-law, Beth Strode of Shelbyville, TN; niece, Martha Clay Penland and nephew, Joe (Winnie) Foster.

Services will be 10 a.m. on Monday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday and after 9 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky.
