Betty Hight Spurrier, 83, formerly of Park Regency, Owensboro, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011. Born in Neodesha, Kansas, a daughter of the late Clyde B. and Mary Theresa Magen Hight, Mrs. Spurrier was a member of First Baptist Church and a former member of Whitesville Baptist Church. After retiring as the receptionist for Daviess County High School in 1969, she worked with her husband, the late Herman E. Spurrier, Jr. at Spurrier's IGA in Whitesville. Mrs. Spurrier was an active and committed volunteer at Highland Elementary School, the staff of which she considered to be her extended family. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Clyde B. "Sonny" Hight, II and Jack Hight.
Mrs. Spurrier is survived by her children, Anita S. Newman and her husband Claude, Jr. of Philpot and Herman E. "Sonny" Spurrier, III and his wife Linda, of Owensboro; her grandchildren Carrie Newman (Donnie) Munsey, Molly Newman (Gavin) Roberts, Claude B. "Shack" (Heather) Newman, III, Whitney Spurrier (Alex) Haynes, Christopher "Skip" Spurrier, and Suzannah Spurrier; her great-grandchildren Finley Munsey, Everett Munsey, Claudia Munsey, Millie Roberts, Emme Roberts, Macy Roberts, Abby Newman, Hattie Newman, Annie Newman, Hunter Haynes, Courtland Spurrier, Taylor Adkinson, Tyler Adkinson, Trevor Adkinson, Trace Adkinson,; and her sister, Bettie (Lee) Kincaid.
The funeral service for Mrs. Spurrier, officiated by Dr. Paul Strahan, will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory from 2:00 until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:30 until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Cates Cemetery in Whitesville. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Highland Elementary School Library Fund or the Cates Cemetery Fund, c/o Whitesville Baptist Church.
