Heaven has welcomed another saint, as Betty Anne Schroer Short passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the home of her daughter, Sarah Walker, after battling Alzheimer's disease for several years and ultimately succumbing to cancer.
Born on March 7, 1931 in Lexington, Kentucky to Besse Glidewell Schroer and George H. Schroer, she moved at a young age to Bowling Green, Kentucky where she grew up and graduated from College High Training School in 1949. She then attended Western Kentucky University where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree. Mrs. Short enjoyed reminiscing about her years at College High and Western, where Coach Ed Diddle was a surrogate father to her and she had many fond memories of accompanying Coach Diddle, his daughter, Mary Jo (Phillips) and other friends to Western's basketball games.
Mrs. Short was an avid reader and had a long career in teaching, including having taught at Philpot Elementary, Apollo High School and retired from Daviess County High School. Early in her marriage she taught English in Okinawa, Japan while her husband served in the United States Air Force. Throughout her career she was known as a devoted teacher whose students were all her ''children'' and whose kindness, patience and compassion were endless; therefore, to honor her memory the family hopes that her legacy be carried on by those who knew and loved her by performing random acts of kindness in the coming days.
A Catholic by faith, Mrs. Short was preceded in death by her parents, Besse and George Schroer, and her husband of 49 years, Judge Robert M. Short. Lovingly known as ''Granny,'' she is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Stephen Taylor of Louisville, Sarah and Marty Walker of Owensboro, and Mary Kay and Kendall Weihe of Goshen, Kentucky; her beloved grandchildren, Zach, Emily and Josh Taylor (Cyndi) of Louisville, Matthew, Anna and Hadley Walker of Owensboro, and Kate, Kelsey, Kendall and Cecilia Weihe of Goshen; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Marie Eckard of Duck, NC, Margaret Holzmer (Robert) of Nashville; a brother, George Schroer (Sue) of Clarksville, TN; a brother- and sister-in-law, William L. and Betty Lou Short of Shelbyville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are at noon on Friday, April 18, 2008 at Glenn Funeral Chapel with Rev. Steve Cripps and Father Tony Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be 3-8 P.M. Thursday, April 17, 2008 and after 10 A.M. on Friday at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice and Palliative Care or to Alzheimer's Association.
