Betty Jo King, 80, of Owensboro died Thursday, April 30 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. She was born in Daviess County to the late David R. and Ardelle Layman.
She most recently worked at Owensboro Country Club where she had served in a variety of roles for more than 15 years. Prior to that she worked at Highland Elementary School Cafeteria and spent many years with Bacon's Department Store and Browning Designers as a drapery seamstress and installer.
In 1978 Betty joined the John B. Hinkle Rebekah Lodge #39 where she served in many positions, including Noble Grand, treasurer and secretary. She was the only lady to serve two terms as President of the Kentucky Rebekah Assembly. Betty was also a longtime member of the Toastmaster International #1730 Club and an Honorable Kentucky Colonel. She was a breast cancer survivor and belonged to a local square dancing club. Betty enjoyed fishing, sewing, reading and collecting lighthouses and hummingbirds.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dick Edward Shank in 1964 and her second, William Bell King in 1987.
Betty is survived by a son, Mendel Ross Shank of Bristol, VA; daughters, Helen May Singleton (Billy) of Hawesville and Lisa Dell Ritter (Todd) of Peachtree City, GA; grandchildren, B.J., Benny and Alyssa Singleton, Daniel Onley, Scott and Crystal Ritter, Jesse Eads, Mendel Shank II, Danielle and Marshall Shank; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Marion David Layman of Warren, MI; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be 2:00 PM Sunday, May 3 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Dr. Glenn Sowards will officiate. Burial will be at Clear Run Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-6 PM Saturday and after 12 on Sunday at the funeral home.
