Bettie Grace Vaughn

Bettie Grace Reynolds Vaughn, 84, of Owensboro, died Saturday, February 3, 2024, at the Hermitage Health and Rehab. The Daviess County native was born December 10, 1939, to the late Malcolm Thomas Reynolds and Margaret Elizabeth Silbereisen Reynolds. Bettie was a graduate of Daviess County High School (Class of 1958) and started working the day after graduation. She eventually retired from Daramic in 2005 after 45 dedicated years of service. Bettie started working at what was then originally Dewey & Almy back in 1959 and worked in a variety of departments over the years including the switchboard, purchasing department, and finally the accounting department. Bettie was extremely dedicated to her work and made several lifelong friends over the years. She was greatly loved by her friends and coworkers with many of them giving her special nicknames over the years including "Betty Boop," "Booper," and "Amazing Grace."

Bettie had many interests throughout her life but her most passionate one dealt with her love and adoration of flowers and gardening. She had a unique ability with plants and could seemingly make dead things grow. She spent many long, wonderful hours in her backyard flower gardens and always kept up with the latest gardening catalogs and could rattle off botanical names of plants with the greatest of ease. She grew a wide variety of flowers and often was called upon by others for her expertise and advice. She grew everything from roses, geraniums, coneflower, sedum, liriope, hostas, and had a special affinity for orchids.

Bettie also loved traveling with her family in the South and fondly recalled many trips to historic sites throughout the years. Some of the places she visited included Colonial Williamsburg, VA, Bellingrath Gardens, Mobile, AL, The Biltmore House, Asheville, NC, multiple plantation homes in Charleston, SC, Fort Pickens State Park, Pensacola, FL, Bonaventure Cemetery and Historic Savannah, GA, and finally, she really enjoyed getting to see the Blue Angels on the Pensacola Naval Base some years back.

Bettie was also involved for a brief time in the Southern Belles chapter of the Homemakers Club in Thruston through the Daviess County Extension Office. She was also an active member at Yellow Creek Baptist Church for thirty plus years. In the past she helped with VBS on several occasions, assisted with hospital visits for other church members, and really loved her Sunday School class and its members.

In addition to her parents, Bettie also was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Earl Vaughn, in July 2021, and her beloved son, Barry Lee Vaughn, in 1977; brother, Jimmie Lee Reynolds.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Christy Vaughn Temple and husband, Graham; half-brother, James Larry Reynolds of Lowell, Indiana, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral for Bettie Vaughn will be 10:00 am Friday, February 9 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be Thursday from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm and Friday from 9:00 am until the time of service. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Alzheimer's Association https://act.alz.org. Her daughter would also like to profusely thank the various caregivers from Timesavers Kentucky LLC for taking care of her at home and finally for the dedicated staff for the care and devotion at The Hermitage Nursing Home.
