Benjamin Algene "Al" Johnston, 83 passed away July 20, 2015. He was born in Webster County on October 20, 1931 and attended Madisonville High School. After leaving school he married the love of his life, Marie Cunningham Johnston. Shortly after the marriage he left Madisonville to fight in the Korean War. Later, he graduated from the School of Mechanical Arts in Evansville, IN while working full time at Smith's Tool and Die. He moved to Owensboro in 1962 working as a production manager at Kentucky Electronics (Kentron), later he was the production manager at Premium Allied Tool Inc.
He was a member of Post Nine American Legion and taught classes through Junior Achievement. He was a member of Primitive Baptist Church in Madisonville then moved his membership to Owensboro Christian Church. Hobbies included hunting, fishing, golf and was an automobile enthusiast, also a fixer uper.
Proceeded in death by his parents, Cannie Mae (Sisk) and Edgar Franklin Johnston and sisters: Modell Johnston, Evelyn Peters, brothers: Dudley Johnston, Elgin Johnston, Orville Johnston, and Edgar Johnston Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Marie Cunningham Johnston, two children: Vicki Mattingly (husband Joe Mattingly) and Barry Johnston (wife Jamie) and one granddaughter: Mckenzie Mattingly. Other survivors include siblings Katherine Gibson of Evansville, IN, Ernest Edwin Johnston of Henderson and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family appreciates the help and support they received from the Mitchell Memorial Cancer Center, Dr. Jewraj G. Maheshwari, Dr. Johnny Makhoul, Dr. Jeffery Hofer and staff, Dr. Darin Patel, nurses and staff of the Owensboro Medical Health System Hospital.
Funeral Services will be Friday July 24, 2015 at 10:00am at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Pastor Myke Templeton and Pastor Donnie Thomas officiating, visitation will be Thursday July 23, 2015 from 4:00pm - 8:00pm at the funeral home, with additional visitation Friday from 1:00pm till 2:00pm at Primitive Baptist Church in Madisonville, KY, Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery in Madisonville.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to American Cancer Society.
